Matt. 22- 37
Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
What would it look like if this was what we were to strive for as believers in Yeshua Messiah? I mean, REALLY tried to practice it every day?
Love YHVH. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
What does that mean, exactly? Well, since the Bible is absolutely littered with passages on what it means to love, how it looks to love, what we find when we love, and how we become more like Messiah when we love, it’s a safe bet that we really have no excuse, do we? It sounds simple enough- and make no mistake if we are walking in the Spirit of Truth it gets demonstrably easier as we journey, but we as humans are so bent toward “SELF”, aren’t we? It is a struggle that all believers know very well. The great news is that we are given a measure of grace each time we stumble and YHVH encourages us to get back up and try again! In order to really begin to understand love for all it’s value, we must stay in the word, we must learn to seek other’s well being before our own, and we must learn to present ourselves daily as an offering to YHVH. These are the two great commandments. Love YHVH. Love your neighbor as yourself.
Let’s walk this out! If we claim to follow Yeshua and we have given our lives to Him, we should strive to find love in all places, within all people, in all situations. We should learn to joyfully enter the struggle of sacrificing our own selves to elevate someone else. We should be kind and understanding in place of being demanding and hard to please. Work diligently to sow the seeds of hope into a cause, a place, or an individual. Always seek the good in all it’s beautiful forms, wherever it hides- be that in the face of a child, in the healing of a heartbreak, or in the life of one who is struggling in sin. No matter where you are right now, YHVH IS ABLE. He calls us to love, and love radically- and He has promised to give us a new heart that will make that love possible! When we walk in love, we walk a little closer to Yeshua and we look a little more like Him. Only when we understand love and begin to walk it out will we cease to be close minded, short sighted, self absorbed, and hard-hearted. Only then will we be able to replace bad fruit with good fruit worthy of eating and be used to truly bless others for His sake. Only then will we know the freedom of being a Disciple.
Abba Father, I pray that we, as believers, will turn to you and ask for an abundance of grace and guidance from your Holy Spirit to teach us how to embody love daily. We understand that we get caught up in ourselves sometimes, and we fail to walk out these two great commands the way You ask of us, and I am so thankful for your grace and encouragement to refocus and try again. I pray that as you teach us this truth by your unfailing example, YHVH, that we will learn to follow in your footsteps and be made a little more into the image of Yeshua. Amien!
